After obtaining my MBBCh from Cardiff Medical School, my initial training in General Medicine took place in South Wales, including a year in Cardiology in a DGH. I then pursued a career in Primary Care and became a GP Principal in Cardiff with two clinical sessions in a local DGH including a Cardiology outpatient and an Echocardiography session.
I developed my passion for Geriatric Medicine whilst in Primary Care and returned to hospital Geriatric training and later became a consultant Geriatrician at University Hospital Llandough. A major part of my MD thesis was the evaluation of an open access echocardiography service (used mostly by older patients) and the use of BNP to pre-select patients for echocardiography. I have been accredited by the British Society of Echocardiography at proficiency level in Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography since 2002. I also hold an honorary Senior Lectureship awarded by Cardiff University.
My subspecialty interests are chronic heart failure and cardiac diseases of older people. I am a member of our local Heart Failure Team. I perform echocardiography on my patients with suspected heart failure referred to my outpatients. I supervise the Day Hospital Heart Failure service where we optimise the complex heart failure medications for the very frail older patient, optimally manage their complex chronic diseases and provide an exercise based heart failure rehabilitation programme. My current research interests include Frailty and Comprehensive Geriatric assessments for patients undergoing TAVI and other cardiac surgical interventions.
